Coffee Fundamentals

Coffee is truly a unique beverage. The more you explore its complexity, the more enjoyment you get out of it.

Coffee has over 800 flavour characteristics compared with wine at 400 (and with no headache in the morning).

This is why, if you choose to explore the wonderful world of gourmet coffees, it is good to know the basics.

  • Water – Makes up 98% of your coffee. This is easily overlooked when brewing coffee. We recommend you start with a good source of water.
  • Equipment – Keep your equipment clean and follow manufacturer's instructions.
  • Brewing – Temperature is very important. Brewing temperature should be 195-205°F or 92-96°C.
  • Grind – Grind your beans just before brewing your coffee to maintain freshness (very important).  Make sure you are using the right grind for your machine.
    • Drip coffee maker – Medium grind - brewing time of 4-6 minutes
    • French Press – Coarse grind – brewing time of 7-8 minutes
    • Espresso – Fine to very fine grind – brewing time of 30 seconds to 3 minutes. (You may want to experiment a little to find the right grind for your machine.)
  • Coffee - The world of coffee is so vast, that you may want to discover what type of coffee suits you. You could explore coffees by country, region, roast types, blends, etc.
